My Approach to Counselling

I am a professionally qualified counsellor and have studied a wide range of philosophies and theories of counselling and therapy, and follow an integrative path.

I have experience of helping clients young and old with a range of issues including bereavement, depression, addictive behaviours and family and relationship problems. My approach is not to fix, patch up, explain away or find an escape; I work with my clients to discover the core issues at the root of our fears, anxieties and suffering and so help to bring them to an end.

I offer the first counselling session for free, and from there agree cost, frequency and duration of sessions. I also undertake personal and group work with mindfulness, meditation and transpersonal practices. I have explored both traditional and esoteric meditative traditions for more than thirty years, and can testify to their transformational and liberating value. I am as equally at home with strategies gleaned from Neuro Linguistic Programming as the transforming approach of Zen Buddhism.

I am a graduate of Liverpool University where I studied Philosophy and Psychology.  I am a qualified teacher in adult education and have an advanced diploma in Integrative Counselling from the Iron Mill Institute, Exeter.  I am a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists, which represents the majority of professional counsellors and their clients within the UK, and adhere to their code of ethics and guidance for good practice.

Testimonials

I thought I'd need years of counselling. I can hardly believe how different life is after so few sessions.

The work you did with me goes on daily. I understand the concept of thanking somebody, even though it is difficult when you want to stab them with a biro. I now go thank you, because it leaves you feeling peaceful. You were a good teacher and I have not looked back since we first met. All part of the journey.

It was so valuable having someone outside of family and friends to talk openly to, without being judged or told what to do. It really helped.
